SIX DIMENSION OF LANGUAGE ACQUISITION

Wolfgang Klein states that there are three components  which determine the process language acquisition:
a) Propensity
b) Language Faculty
c) Access
Propensity

This is the Inner Force that any human being has to communicate.
It can be produced  for 4 factors:
Social Integration
It refers to the need of the learners to become integrated or become a member of  a certain social or cultural group, having a social a personal identity.
The learner wants to produce sounds or to be recognized as a native

Communicative needs: Is the way like a learner selects the right vocabulary or the right utterance according to the situation.
The learner wants to communicate or express something. He/she uses the language as a instrumental.

Attitud:  It can be Conscious or Unconcious.

Education: It is the weaktest of all because it depends on the outside and not on the inside of the learner.
Language Faculty:(Language Processor)

Human beings have a natural capacity for processing language, both as a speaker and listener.
The functioning  of the language processor depends on certaind Biological determinants and the Knowledge available to the speaker.

Biological determinants: Articulatory apparatus and Auditory
The Knowledge available: classifies knowledge into two: Consciuos (it refers to knowledge acquired from other people , books , at school, etc.) and Tacit knowledge (it refers to the unconcious knowledge the learner has of a language, eg. the rules of grammar, the syntax.  .
Access

This is fundamental because the languiage cannot oparate without tha access to its raw material.
It has two components that must be distinguished: Input and the range of opportunities for communication
Input: The input relates to the social interaction that learner can have with other speakers. In this context the learner must know who is speaking to whom, when and where, he must see and understand the "body language"and note the reactions of te listener. It is modified for context and environment.

Opportinmities for communication

If the learner has a lot of opportunities to communicate, his/her will be able to acquire more language.
  • Frecuency input is important because he/she need receive more linguistics input.
  • He/she needs test his/her own speech production.
The acquisition process comes to an end as soon as the learner stops being aware of the differences between his own speech producion and that of his environment.
